Groundwater Conservation District

Aransas County Groundwater Conservation District

The authority for the district was given by the Texas Legislature in 2015. SB1360 and HB4207 effective September 01, 2015.

The District must be approved by the voters of Aransas County, and if approved, will be funded by a tax of up to one cent per hundred dollars property valuation and/or fee based revenue generated by permits.

The District will be managed by a Board of Five Directors, who are initially appointed by the Commissioners Court. District Directors will serve staggered four year terms and after the initial term will stand for election.

District Purpose

The purpose of the Groundwater Conservation Distrct is to ensure that there is sufficient groundwater to meet the needs of residents and businesses for the foreseeable future. Additionally, its purpose is to prevent malicious or wasteful use of groundwater, regulate the sale of groundwater outside of the county, and to set and manage the annual drawdown of the water table to meet the Desired Future Condition agreed by the TWDB and GMA15.

Acquifers affected by the District include, Dune Ridge, Chicot, and Evangeline.
